Decolonizing Art Narratives : Lamia Joreige in conversation with Dr. Yasmine Khayyat
The first of a one academic year lecture-series, "Decolonizing Art Narratives; Arab Women Artists Today" presents a dynamic group of Arab female artists and practitioners across disciplines and regions in the Middle East exploring issues of gender, politics, colonialism, culture and identity. This lecture series asks: How might we revisit and rethink existing narratives in contemporary art? The lectures as a whole reinforce the focus theme—the pursuit of decolonized art narratives.

Join us for the second artist lecture of the series by Lamia Joreige, followed by a moderated discussion with Dr. Yasmine Khayyat.

Visual artist and filmmaker Lamia Joreige will discuss her artistic practice, using archival documents and elements of fiction to reflect on history and its potential narration. In her work she explores the tension between the temptation and the impossibility of representing the Lebanese Wars and their aftermath within the city of Beirut. In this vein she reflects on notions of loss, disappearance and relative truth, and the potential for narrative that they instigate. What images of history do we retain and what images of it can we re-create from actual or conceivably erased traces?

"Essentially, my work attempts to capture and translate time, its effects and its traces on us by using repetition, reenactment and recollections, and by exploring its unfolding and suspension through moving and still images as well as multimedia installations." - Lamia Joreige

Attendance is free and open to the public.
