William Spriggs​, Ph.D.​
Professor at Howard University and Chief Economist to The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations
William Spriggs​, Ph.D.​ is a professor and former Chair of the Department of Economics at Howard University and serves as Chief Economist to the AFL-CIO. He was the 2016 recipient of the National Academy of Social Insurance’s Robert M. Ball Award for Outstanding Achievements in Social Insurance and the 2014 NAACP Benjamin L. Hooks​ Keeper of the Flame​ Award. From 2009 to 2012, ​Dr. Spriggs​​​​​ served as Assistant Secretary for the Office of Policy at the United States Department of Labor, having been appointed by President Barack Obama, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Dr. Spriggs is a former president of the National Economics Association, the organization of America’s professional Black economists, and is a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance and the National Academy of Public Administration. He graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts​ ​and holds a doctorate in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
